WELCOME

Hi! I'm Josh

I'm an Integrative Therapist working online and in-person in the centre of Bristol.

I work with a wide range of issues but have a particular focus on helping people relieve anxiety, process trauma and improve self-esteem.

I'm passionate about helping people with these challenges, especially as I've experienced them in my own life.

I weave a blend of therapeutic approaches to help you find more peace and joy in life.

COUNSELLING WITH JOSH

Let's be honest, it can be quite daunting to meet a stranger and share vulnerably about parts of our lives we wouldn't normally share.

I know the courage needed for seeking support, I've been there myself.

For this reason, I aim to create a warm and welcoming environment free of judgement, to help you to feel safe and supported to express yourself freely.

When working with trauma and unprocessed emotions, I blend different therapeutic approaches to suit you as an individual.

I have a genuine curiosity and compassion for your story and experiences.

All parts of you are welcome.

FEEL IT TO HEAL IT

When we're holding trauma or overwhelming emotions in our bodies, we tend to live upstairs in our anxious minds.

If your house suddenly flooded, then taking refuge upstairs would be an excellent survival strategy.

To only live upstairs after the flood, never tending to the impact downstairs, would certainly make your home feel unwelcoming. Eventually, the damp and mould from downstairs would make its way upstairs, making that floor feel uninhabitable too.

I believe facing what lies beneath is the best way to create lasting healing and growth. But, it's important to do this work at a pace that is right for you, to ensure we don't just run back upstairs never to return!

MY STORY

MY STORY

I spent much of my life crippled by anxiety, avoiding a feeling of being broken in some fundamental way.

I masked this with an unhealthy relationship to alcohol and overworking in the music industry.

I turned to therapy when it became more painful to avoid my emotions than to face them. I was able to work through fear, sadness and shame, which was blocking me from being my most authentic self.

Since then, I have found so much more strength, peace and joy in my life.

I know how isolating it can feel when you're struggling, and that's why I became a therapist. I want to help others who are ready to begin a healing journey.

MY APPROACHES

Person-Centred

The person-centred approach is about creating the ideal therapeutic conditions for growth. These include unconditional positive regard, empathy, authenticity, and non-judgmental listening provided by the therapist.

Somatic

Trauma and overwhelming emotions are stored in the body. Working with the body helps us get to the root. Awareness with our felt experience in the here and now gives us the opportunity to connect to, express and process stuck emotions.

Parts-Work

We all have many different internal characters or 'parts'. A commonly recognised part is the internal critic. Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a parts-work therapy that provides a simple process to communicate with parts, compassionately witness past pain, and unburden heavy emotions or beliefs parts hold.

Attachment

Attachment theory is an incredible tool for creating awareness of the dynamics in our relationships. If our caregiver isn't present with us, we develop strategies to get our needs met as best we can as children. Learning about our attachment style can empower us to make new choices in our adult relationships.

Regulation

Regulating the nervous system helps us self-soothe and create safety in the body when we are triggered. Creating safety helps us have more capacity for life's stressors, be more present, and support us in processing challenging emotions safely.

Inner Child

We all have an inner child we can connect to. Many inner children are scared, sad, angry, and need to be heard. Through 'reparenting' we can become the compassionate and regulated adult we may missed out on as a child and help them return to their natural state of joy and playfulness.
